Ray Alexander Simons, who passed away in September 2004, was an extraordinary woman who, as a Jew, feminist, leading communist, trade unionist, stalwart in the liberation movement in South Africa and partner of Jack Simons for over fifty-four years, has been recognized for her contribution to the creation of a democratic South Africa.
Ray played a dominant role in shaping unions and organizations, such as the Food and Canning Workers䴜 Union (now FAWU), of which Comrade Ray was president for life and the Federation of South African Women (FSAW).
In 2004 she was awarded Isithwalandwe, the ANC䴜s highest honour, in recognition of her achievements.
